The Beastie Boys – Japanese Street Icons?

At the 2009 MTV Video Awards Japan, the Beastie Boys were presented with the Street Icons Award by Nigo.

Not sure how this award was decided as most young Japanese  have no idea who the Beastie Boys are.

The Beastie Boys are however obvious fans of Japan. Why else would you dress up as Japanese construction workers and dance in Shibuya and Shinjuku train stations. And who better to defend Tokyo from an enormous octopus headed monster than the Beastie Boys at the helm of a giant robot.

Honest question: how many Japanese know about MTV Japan? I had no idea it existed, but then, I’m probably 20 years over the age when I’d be expected to. Or is it being produced more for the benefit of a home audience in Europe and the US rather than the ostensible audience here? As in “And now, from our sister channel in Japan, straight from Shibuya, the amazing …”.

MTV Japan is quite popular. Many people have satellite television and MTV Japan is usually included if you buy a any of the multi-channel packages. About half the music is Japanese and half international. They regularly show the Japan, US, and International top 20

Intergalactic… that’s taking me back a year or 2. Great song (can I call it a song even?) and even better music video.
