I happened to spot this scene from my hotel window. It says so much about life in modern Japan. Concrete and steel fill the scene, but a small patch of greenery and spirituality remains.
This is pretty common in Osaka; I thought that was the case elsewhere in Japan too?
It’s apparently a tradition when building larger buildings; spiritual protection from lightning, fire and other disasters. Sometimes it’s a whole shrine like this, sometimes just a small closet-like niche. It can be on the roof or occasionally on street level.
Whether tragic or uplifting, I don’t know, but it’s certainly awesome.
Even in this day and age of industrial and corporate urban surroundings, there is still space in Japanese life for the spiritual.
