Debate today about the fact that LOL has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary.
In fact I really did laugh out loud when I saw your picture but I wouldn’t write LOL in a comment!

It does look cooler than the right-way forward though. Reminds me of Leningrad Cowboys.

“but I wouldn’t write LOL in a comment!” – and yet you did, twice. ^_^ It’ll creep up on you, you’ll see.

It does belong in OED. The purpose of dictionaries is to describe the language as it is used, not as you would want it to be. It’s a description, not a prescription. LOL is used by people so it belongs there. I expect ROFL, RTFM and tl;dr to also appear at some point if they haven’t already.

You need to run – not walk – to your nearest website and buy Leningrad Cowboys Go America. It’s ..odd. In a very good way.

It ran on late-night tv once when I was a student, and we set the dorm video to record it. The next morning I was on my way to a mrning lecture, but turned it on just to see that it had been recorded OK. I never got to that lecture. After about fifteen seconds I was completely stuck, and had to see the rest of the movie.
