Bathing in the Ganges at Dawn

Dawn over the Ganges River

Dawn over the Ganges River

Dawn breaks over the Ganges. Along the riverbank in Varanasi, hundreds come to bathe in the holy waters.

  1. It looks so peaceful and colourful in pictures.. However, I heard stories about Varanasi which make you feel otherwise… How dirty the water is and the corpses floating in it.. Is that right or wrong?

    • Although I considered it I didn’t bathe in the water myself. Varanasi is quite the sensory overload. There are animals roaming everywhere which means there is a lot of urine and excrement on the streets. There is also quite a lot of rotting garbage. There are human corpses being burned, but I didn’t see any in the river. I did see dead animals including dogs and cows floating in the river or washed up on the riverbank. In the streets you are going to be approached by people trying to sell you things or simply ask you for money. If you are going anywhere on the road by auto rickshaw or taxi, you will experience the chaos of driving in India.
Varanasi is amazing but not for the faint of heart!
