A few shots of the various Koteka worn by men of one tribe at the Goroka Show. I can’t find the name of this tribe in my notes so if anyone knows please tell me!

October 25th, Karate Day – A Master Class at Shuri
After the earlier demonstrations in the shicha-nu-una, the final events of karate day took place in the forecourt of Shuri Castle. Eight of the most senior karate masters in the world each performed a kata. Of the eight, I’ve only photographed Zenpo Shimabukuro sensei which just shows how much further we have to go with the Karate Masters Portrait Project.
Karate Day – October 25th
On Okinawa, October 25th is Karate Day. There have been various events happening all month, but yesterday the main ceremony took place at Shuri Castle.
As you can imagine, there were a lot of black belts, and quite a few red / white belts worn by the masters of certain karate styles.
There were a few demonstrations of traditional kata both in groups and alone.
And some set movement sparring
Kiyohide Shinjo demonstrated why he’s known as the Okinawan Superman.
And why he doesn’t need an axe to chop firewood.

Three shots of the same boy from the Kowampi tribe. He had this half smile on his face, and was standing amongst a group of women.

I was told that the black skin is done by mixing ash from a wood fire with butter. This is then smeared onto the skin to create the traditional tribal style of the Nomba.

Members of the Eyarokawe tribe had wonderful interesting faces, and their headdresses reminded me of Tina Turner. I believe the tusks in their mouths are from wild boar. The young kid above, would probably win the award for most adorable child in Papua New Guinea.

Pete uses off camera flash everyday as an wedding photographer. He can use it to overpower the sun, and create flattering light for the bride and groom. He’s very good a what he does, and a great person to learn from.
On the first day we will talk about the different types of strobes and how to get the most out of them on and off camera. The second day we will move from TTL to manual flash control, and from wired to wireless triggers. At the end of the weekend we will hit the beach and Pete will give a short masterclass in location lighting with a model.
Students should have their own digital SLR camera. If you have a flash please bring it along, but it is not necessary for the course. We will have plenty of gear for everyone to play with test out.
For me, off camera flash is a useful tool that allows me to get editorial shots that would have otherwise been impossible. There’s a flash and either a trigger or cords kept in my travel bag so that I always have the option of bringing my own light to the party.
And here are a couple of images of Pete and I, taken with off camera flash by Shawn Miller. Shawn attended the OCF workshop previously and now creates amazing images with that extra splash of magical light.
