“The Pacific” a new HBO miniseries

The Pacific HBO miniseries

The Pacific a new HBO miniseries

Yesterday I watched an interview with Tom Hanks on The Colbert Report. Hanks discussed his latest project, the HBO miniseries titled The Pacific. Following on from the critically acclaimed Band of Brothers that was based on  events in Europe during WWII, The Pacific will look  at the Pacific Theater of Operations. Events in the series include the invasions of Peleliu, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

I am very interested to see how the invasion of Okinawa is portrayed. The Battle of Okinawa, also known as the Typhoon of Steel was one of the most horrific events in history. Thousands of American and Japanese troops were killed, and along with them approximately 140,000 civilians. Some died during the air assault, others from malaria, starvation and forced mass suicides. Trapped between two warring powers, the Okinawans were killed by both sides.

Okinawans that survived the war, have told me that by remembering the events it will hopefully prevent a similar tragedy from ever happening again. Having heard some of their stories, it is hard to visit places like the cliffs of Cape Zampa without thinking about the Okinawan men, women and children forced into lines by Japanese soldiers then told to step off the edge.

I went to a memorial exhibition of Great Tokyo Air Raids on March 10 at Asakusa Kokaido Hall. 100,000 citizens were killed in one night. It has been a big question for me why Japan had to continue the war until the massive sacrifices among the citizens happened. Toward the end of the war, the sky of Japan was controlled totally by American forces and they attacked and bombed as much as to the extent for fun. They shot and dropped bombs on fleeing people crossing the Kototoi Bridge from Asakusa district to Mukojima district.

It appears angers of Okinawan people held down for long are finally gushing out with the base problem and their indignation is directed both to Japan and America.

I have watched and have on DVD the Band of Brothers. I have begun to watch the new series Pacific and it is just great. I am looking foward to the neext 9 weeks. I have read about most of the major battles in the Pacific and what occurrs to me if this story and others like it never get told is that they will be forgotten. Remember, in Europe there are still the villages and cities that have been rebult and stand in tribute to those men that have fought there. But these islands and atolls, were obscure before the war and now there is nothing there for people to travel to, so they are just as obscure now. For example, Wake Island was a staging place for the old Pam American Clipper. Pam American Airlines even had their own hotel on that Island. Today there’s nothing there and because of the vetgitation, no one would ever know that a battle with the Marines ever took place.

POORLY done series….considering the significance of these battles. Just as a viewer.. theres no focus on characters or technical merit to watch. WAY too dark to even watch. My father was there, and said..so far its nothing like how it was.. Biggest letdown EVER!
