My new home / office is located right next to the Ryugujo Butterfly Park in Motobu. I think most butterflies at the park are in netted enclosures, but to quote the great Dr. Ian Malcolm:
“If there is one thing the history of evolution has taught us it’s that life will not be contained. Life breaks free, expands to new territories, and crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously, but, ah, well, there it is.”
The result is that my garden seems to be filled with a glorious assortment of lepidoptera. I’ve bought a field guide to the butterflies of Japan, but it doesn’t include pics of the caterpillars. For now I just watch these anonymous critters crawl around the undergrowth, enjoying life in the summer sun.
