This was just a quick test shot as an example of bounce flash. Put it up on Flickr and it turned out to be one of my most popular shots of the year. I recently bought a Pentax AF-360FGZ flash so that I could use it’s high speed sync functionality in certain situations. Will post more images taken with the flash and my thought on it in a later post.
Pete Leong and I will be holding an Off Camera Flash Weekend Workshop on January 28th and 29th, 2PM to 6PM The lesson fee is US$150 and class size is restricted to a maximum of 10 students. The course will take place at my home in Ishikawa, Okinawa and in the surrounding area. Students should have their own SLR digital camera that they are reasonably comfortable using in manual mode. This is an intermediate level workshop. If you are not sure about things like aperture & shutter speed and how to control them then I’d recommend taking the Photography 101 class first. (The next one will be held January 14th and 15th) If you already have your own flash, sync cords, or triggers please bring them along, but Pete and I will have plenty for people to share and experiment with. The course will start with an introduction to the types of flashes we will be using, the different methods to sync them to your camera, and ways to both mount the flash and modify …
A fun shoot with Karima last week. Makeup artist Summer Johnson did a natural look for the first image then flexed her artistic muscles for the second. For the natural shot I used a large octabox as the main light, for the makeup shot I used the beauty dish. You can see the different catchlights in the model’s eyes, and also the different way the light wraps around the face.
A quick post to let people know that the dates for the two January workshops have been finalized. More information about the courses will be posted in the next few days, but wanted to get this up as soon as possible so people can keep space available in their schedules. To book a place on either course please send an email to chris@travel67.com Photography 101 Weekend Workshop Dates: January 14th and 15th 10AM to 6PM Fee: US$250 Class Size: Max 4 students Instructor: Chris Willson Off Camera Flash Weekend Workshop Dates: January 28th and 29th 2PM to 6PM Fee: US$150 Class Size: Max 10 students Instructors: Pete Leong & Chris Willson
All the credit for this look goes to makeup artist Summer. I think it’s a hybrid between Kill Bill’s Gogo Yubari and Lady Gaga. A big thanks to Adriesa for spending the evening looking like a glam pirate.
There’s a new photograph in the limited edition prints section of the TRAVEL67.com website. Orders placed before December 15th will be shipped and should arrive before Christmas. For those living in Okinawa a selection of smaller prints are currently on sale at both the Kadena Gift Corner and the Dojo karate bar in Naha. Some of my larger prints from recent exhibitions are also on display in the Dojo so please drop by next time you’re in the city.
After her jaunt as a Flapper girl, Tomoko goes back to the future. Of course she travels with her faithful sidekick Aibo. Model: Tomoko Peters Makeup: Summer Johnson
I had MTV’s songs of the decade on in the background while I was cleaning the house and thought I saw the word Okinawa in a country music video. Went on You Tube to check my sanity and at 2 mins 43 seconds there it is. I think it’s a CGI billboard on an empty building. 2 seconds later the glass blows out of the windows as the singer walks past. My thoughts are that the CGI designer may have some kind of Okinawan heritage and decided to give a subtle shout out to the little island.
